A more global approach of S&T Cooperation in ICT between Europe and Southeast Asia – Booklet released!

Following our 6th SEACOOP Cooperation Forum held in Yangon, Myanmar on Oct. 25, 2011, the SEACOOP partnership is pleased to announce the release of a public document detailing the policies, programmes, and mechanisms that the European Commission, the ASEAN Secretariat and other international organizations offer to support the strengthening of cooperation in ICT between Europe and Southeast Asia.

This booklet addresses an issue often faced when tackling the development of S&T cooperation in ICT between Europe and the ASEAN region (or other countries and regions of the world such as India and China, Africa or Latin America). The region is quite diverse in terms of development level and benefits from a quick economic development. Therefore, envisioning research cooperation under FP7 may appear as inappropriate or premature in some cases, while other European funding mechanisms (particularly those focusing on ICT for development) may be suited, and may even support a transition period towards cooperation on advanced research.

It is therefore necessary to “bridge the gap between ICT research and ICT for development”, and be able, when addressing S&T cooperation in ICT between the two regions, to introduce to the ASEAN stakeholders the wide spectrum of policies, programmes, and mechanisms which the European Commission, in liaison with the ASEAN Secretariat and other institutions can offer to ASEAN stakeholders, in order that the greatest number of links can be established and smoothly develop.
